I’m officially part of a string quartet!
My cello playing was surprisingly good, apparently.
I’m sure it was meant as a compliment when my tutor said I was better at the cello than the viola, but I’m not entirely happy about it. I’ve always got the feeling that she sees the viola as a sort of clumsy violin, and not really quite useful for anything but the back beat and the filler notes.
I don’t think the viola is given enough credit, and I know I’m not bringing out the best in it, but I love it none the less. I’ve probably got to work harder to achieve what I want with it, but it will always be my special little thing.
I’m time I hope to be able to bring out the true beauty of my favourite string instrument. And along the way, I’ll keep improving my skills on both violin and cello.
But if anybody asks me what I play, I’m first and foremost a violist!
